She holds a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, where she was also a Mason Fellow, and a master's degree in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. Carolina graduated in Economics and Finance at New York University. She worked as an Associate Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy (also at Harvard University), focusing on new sources of security for international organizations.
Carolina joined the UN and worked as a volunteer until 1997, when she graduated in economics. Disillusioned with the financial market, she remained in the organization until she was assigned to Timor-Leste, where she served in that country's pacification and independence process until 2003. It was during this period that she met the Brazilian Sergio Vieira de Mello, who served as the UN High Commissioner in Timor, and the two developed a relationship. In 2003, both went to Baghdad and, a few months later, Hotel Canal, which had served as the UN headquarters for ten years, was the target of a suicide bombing that killed 22 people, including Sergio. At the time of the attack, she worked in her office in the same building and a few meters from Sergio's office, which was completely destroyed by the truck bomb. Images recorded by TVs right after the attack show Carolina desperate, screaming for Sergio's name in the rubble. Sergio still managed to contact Carolina and the rescue teams by cell phone, but died a few hours later. Carolina resigned from the UN in 2005, severely criticizing the lack of investigations into the incident.
She continues to work in Brazil and Argentina on issues of human rights, public policy and leadership. She is currently a professor at PUC-Rio, Ibmec, and Insper; and also a speaker at UNESCO, NCPI, CLP-São Paulo. - Actor

Mention the name Gilberto and Bossa Nova immediately comes to mind. Astrud was the original 'Girl from Ipanema' (composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes), famously singing the iconic hit song first featured on the classic 1963 album Getz/Gilberto. Released by Verve Records as a single in May 1964, Girl from Ipanema won a Grammy and established Astrud as a hot new commodity on the music scene. She also sang a second number on the album: 'Corcovado' ("Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars").
She was born Astrud Evangelina Weinert in Salvador, in the province of Bahia. Her mother was Evangelina Neves Lobo Weinert who sang and played both violin and a traditional instrument, called a bandolim. Her German-born father Fritz was a language teacher. Through him, Astrud soon became fluent in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. In 1959,19-year old Astrud married the guitarist, vocalist and composer João Gilberto, who is credited as the inventor of Bossa Nova, a music genre fusing elements of traditional Brazilian samba with jazz. In this endeavour, he collaborated with the composer, songwriter, arranger and guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim. Before long, the mellow sound of Bossa Nova found its popularity in the U.S. via exponents like jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd and saxophonist Stan Getz. Astrud went on to sing her signature number in the MGM musical Get Yourself a College Girl (1964), which also featured The Dave Clark Five and The Animals .
In 1965 and 1966, Astrud released her first trio of solo albums, featuring classic songs like 'Agua de Beber', Johnny Mandel 's 'The Shadow of your Smile', 'Tristeza', 'Fly Me to the Moon', 'Manhã de Carnaval' and 'Felicidade'. As her fame grew, she toured the U.S. with Stan Getz, including a famous gig at the Cafe Au Go Go in Greenwich Village. By this time, she had become a single mother, divorced from her husband.
Astrud was later to rue her association with Getz, not just because he was difficult to get on with. Much to her chagrin, Getz and record producer Creed Taylor also both laid exclusive claim to her 'discovery'. Moreover, Astrud received no credit on the original vinyl LP Getz/Gilberto, being merely paid the trifling sum of $120 for the session. Getz reaped the lion's share of profits from the album and denied the singer her fair share of the royalties. That despite the fact that 'Girl from Ipanema' ended up becoming one of the most widely recorded songs in popular music. Bryan McCann, professor of Brazilian history and author of a 2019 book, commented that "It was Astrud Gilberto who made the album a smash hit.Astrud provided the ineffable allure that made the album irresistible."
Some of her later partnerships proved rather more felicitous, notably a jazz album with Gil Evans and a collaboration in 1977 with trumpet player and singer Chet Baker on one of her own songs, 'Far Away'. In 1996, Astrud performed Jobim's beautiful number 'Desafinado' with George Michael for the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Rio. In 2002 she was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame. For all intents and purposes, Astrud left the music scene in the early 2000's, spending her retirement in Philadelphia, away from publicity, studying philosophy, painting and becoming a powerful voice against cruelty to animals.- Mestre Cesar started taking Capoeira at the age of 9. Raul Santos Seixas 28 June 1945 - 21 August 1989) was a Brazilian rock composer, singer, songwriter and producer. He is sometimes called the "Father of Brazilian Rock" and "Maluco Beleza", the last one roughly translated as "Groovy Nutcase". He was born in Salvador (Bahia), Brazil. Every year on Seixas' birthday, legions of fans, including thousands of impersonators (many even changing their last name to Seixas as a sign of passionate admiration), throw a parade in his honor in downtown São Paulo.[1]
His body of work consists of 21 albums released throughout his 26-year career. His musical style is varied, though Rock'n'Roll, folk, and ballads form much of his oeuvre. Raul Seixas also wrote songs that blended non-Anglo styles, including variations of rhythms typical of his native Northeast Brazil like Forró, Baião, Maxixe, Candomblé drumming, and in fact, often used more than one style in the same song, such as in "Let Me Sing, Let Me Sing". 'Canto para minha morte' (Song for my death) is a rock-tango of deep spiritual resonance. His debut album, Raulzito e os Panteras, was produced when he was part of a band of the same name. However, he only gained prominence and critical audience with songs from the album Krig-Há, Bandolo! (1973), such as "Ouro de Tolo" ("Fool's Gold"), 'Mosca na Sopa' ("Fly in the Soup"), and 'Metamorfose Ambulante' ("Walking Metamorphosis"). Raul Seixas developed a musical style that emphasized the free-spirit and the mystic. His album Gita (1974), influenced by figures such as Aleister Crowley, expresses his views directly. Although Raul Seixas never described himself as an adept of Tropicália (Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé, Gal Costa, Jorge Ben Jor, etc), his openness to exploring and mingling sounds and rhythms of different times and cultures with an iconoclastic shows that Tropicália did seem to have a degree of influence in Raul Seixas' artistic output.
Many songs in Gita were co-written with his frequent collaborator, then-fellow mystic and future worldwide bestselling author Paulo Coelho. Raul was interested in philosophy (especially metaphysics and ontology), psychology, history, literature and Latin. In October 2008, nineteen years after his death, Raul Seixas was placed in 19th position in a list of one hundred greatest artists of Brazilian music sponsored by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone magazine,[2] topping the likes of Milton Nascimento, Maria Bethânia, Heitor Villa-Lobos and others, demonstrating the influence that Seixas' music continues to hold today.- Ieda Favo is a Brazilian actress and model.
